DID YOU EVER WONDER WHERE THE WOMEN ARE IN THE STORY OF PASSOVER?
Missing the sound of our voices and taking our cues from the rabbis of old, we imagined ourselves as the women of Exodus. We studied Shifra, Puah, Yocheved, Miriam, Tziporah, and The Egyptian Princess we called Bityah. We listened deeply to hear the voices of women not mentioned: an unknown slave, a friend to Miriam, a wise woman in Midian. We stepped into their shoes, looked out of their eyes and found our story, our teachings, and our liberation.
Moses didn’t just need God’s support to lead the people to freedom - he never would have gotten out of diapers had it not been for the brave women of the Exodus story who risked all so that a little boy might live, and so that an enslaved people might escape to freedom. The midwives Shifra and Puah, Yocheved and Miriam, Pharaoh’s daughter, Tziporah, and all the unnamed women who hold up half the sky — it’s about time that we hear their voices as well. I can’t thank the creators of the “In the Voice of Our Mothers” haggadah enough. This creative and moving work will enrich and expand every Passover seder. And I repeat: it’s about time!

Use this Haggadah at your Seder and you will have a tool for conjuring and honoring forgotten voices. You will welcome the Matriarchs, the unspoken heroines, the moms, Grandmas, the nanas, the bubbes, and the childless women who count on all of us to remember their lives of love and loss. Carol and Susan have lovingly captured and recorded voices in a manner that will bring the Seder to life and encourage future generations in finding their own voices.

I SO enjoyed it. What a beautiful approach to the passover seder journey. The narratives are gorgeous and opened up so many doors into the ritual and experience of the maggid. Truly amazing work.
